The Shantala Subramanyam Trio played in the Town Hall, Bray, on Saturday 29 April as part of the Bray International Jazz Festival. Their music is Indian, not jazz, but it has a strong element of improvisation which gives it an affinity with jazz.
Sitting cross-legged on the stage, Shantala Subramanyam (venu – bamboo flute), Akkarai Sornalatha (violin) and Jayachandra Rao (mridangam – wooden hand drum) played a programme of long and short pieces that were partly composed, partly improvised. While complex to western ears, it was fascinating to listen to. The leader’s flute in particular had a beautiful sound, and all three played superbly.
