Dublinjazz.ie Presents at Bagots Hutton LIVE

Following on from their very succesful album launch back in November we are delighted to be bringing back Julien Colarossi & John Keogh to Bagots Hutton LIVE. Since that debut performance this pair, of exceptional talented musicians, have received great critical praise for their latest album Just The Way You Are. They combine their background in the world of classical and jazz guitar and bring new life to some of the most popular pop tunes over the last 40 years.

The Album

‘Just The Way We Are’ is the continuation and evolution of Julien&John’s debut album ‘Street Life’. Although similar choices were made in terms of selection of songs (originals, movie soundtracks and pop covers), this record features upbeat numbers and longer improvised sections. The choice of recording the album with an archtop and a spanish guitar accentuates the different landscape of sounds that both Julien and John bring to the table and the implementation of percussive techniques, makes for a ‘jazzier and groovier’ sounding record.

The arranging abilities of the Irish guitar duo are on full display on more intricate numbers like ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and ‘Something at Sea’. ‘It’s A Long Road’, an original arrangement of Jerry Goldsmith’s theme track for the movie ‘First Blood’ (1982), showcases John’s classical technique and numbers like ‘Just The Way You Are’ and ‘Golden Lady’ provide a solid harmonic foundation for Julien’s lyrical and jazzier improvisation.

John Keogh and Julien Colarossi met in 2008 when they were both studying the degree in jazz performance and composition at Newpark Music Centre (Dublin, Ireland).

They both pursued projects upon graduating in 2010 and having being firm friends and admirers of each other’s talents they eventually formed a guitar duo in early 2014. It began relatively simply in a restaurant called Eden on St William Street (Dublin) as they were booked regularly on a Saturday night and had to hastily prepare two varied and engaging 50 minute sets.

Julien is a highly versatile and what is known as a ‘dyed in the wool jazzer’ and brings a lyrical quality to his guitar playing from his roots deep in the mountains of beautiful “Val Di Comino” in Italy.

John has studied Spanish and Latin American classical guitar and has a longstanding love of pop music and movie soundtracks and together they fuse their influences in a highly intricate yet accessible act. They’ve spent two and a half years honing their craft together and the results are clear to see and hear on their debut recording ‘Street Life’.
